Some cruisers have installed a shutoff valve on the vent line to prevent salt water from entering the fresh water tank during rough seas

Design Issue
There is a structural design issue with the earlier models (boats made in Australia). The tank is made from the hull mold forming the base and walls and the floor forming the lid. The tank top is glassed directly to the wingdeck. Tortional forces result in the tank leaking at about the 300-400 liter level. If the water tank is overfilled or when sailing in rough conditions it is possible for the water tank to crack and leak water. The repair is major, requiring cutting out the floor and repairing the damage.

Vietnam manufactured boat, have a GRP tank that has a molded base, which is glassed to the top, tested, and then installed into the boat. There have been minimal failures of this design and all likely due to filling the tank from the deck with the hose blocking the deck hole causing the water to over pressurize the tank.

If a leak is found, the suggested course of action is to cut an access hole into the top of the tank, where it can be sealed after inspection.
