Day two brought an easy 11km downhill to Collias on the Gardon river where we exchanged our bicycles for a two-person kayak. This leg would give us 8km of paddling, taking us under the Pont du Gard annd over a few minor rapids.
Initially we planned to eat at Pont du Gard but since that would be a repeat of yesterday we pushed on. Getting back on the bikes the goal was for food. Not too far along we come across Bar L’Eden. It is run by a very nice couple who refilled our water bottles with ice and treated us to an interesting lunch. I opted for something from their “tapas” menu which was called Margaret de Canard (duck breast), what was place before me was a bit of a shock, see the photo below. Lunch finished we peddled on.
It was a hot ride with many km in the direct sun, a section crossing the Rhone before Tarascon on paper looked like a great section, instead it was a grind in the heat. Outside of Tarascon we stopped in the shade of a tree, working up the energy for the final 15km. Thankfully the last 10km was mostly shaded and on a quiet road. Still it was with much relief that we pulled into Le Mas des Carassins, our hotel for the next two nights. Even more relief came in having a dinner reservation at the hotel, meaning we could lounge by the pool and recover from yet another long tough day.
58km cycling (117km total) and 8km paddle completed!
