General
Description: Application of barrier coat to hulls to prevent blisters
Notes
- Remove old bottom paint and barrier coat, exposing gel coat
- Sand with 80 grit sand paper
- Wash with soap
- Wipe with Dewaxer & surface prep
- Apply epoxy barrier coat (grey)
- Wait for layer to cure, finger test (imprint left but no paint on your finger)
- Apply epoxy barrier coat (white)
- Wait for layer to cure, finger test (imprint left but no paint on your finger)
- Apply epoxy barrier coat (white)
- Repeat until five layers have been applied
- If application requires more than one day, wipe with Dewaxer & surface prep at the start of each day
- If using TotalBoat, there is a 60 day window between applying coats
- All bare fiberglass substrates need to be fully cured for at least 5-7 days prior to any surface preparation (3 days at 80-90 degrees)
- Dewax the surface using the two-rag method: Start with a clean, lint-free cotton rag wetted with Dewaxer & Surface Prep. Follow the wetted rag with a dry, clean cotton rag to help remove any contaminants remaining on the surface. Perform this two-rag method 2-3 times to ensure all wax and potential contaminants have been removed
- The entire surface to be barrier coated should have a uniform dull, frosty finish
- Stir the two components together thoroughly for 3-5 minutes, until it forms a uniform, consistent liquid.
- Once mixed, allow this product to sit for 15 minutes. DO NOT ADD ANY THINNER AT THIS TIME. This is the induction period where the two components will begin to react, allowing for the proper cross-linking prior to being applied.
- After the induction period, this product can be thinned as necessary, up to 10% by volume with Epoxy Primer Thinner for all application methods.
- When rolling, use a solvent-safe 3/16" foam or nap roller cover.
- 4-5 coats when using a 3/16" roller cover (leaves the smoothest finish)
- First layer of antifoul needs to go on after finger test past, if it gets hard it must be sanded with 80 grit, washed with soap, wiped with dewaxer & prep (make sure to do last barrier coat the day of the anit-foul application!
