Abnormal Engine Analysis

I’ve been a subscriber of Savvy Avaiation’s SavvyAnalysis since I completed my build in 2021 and from day one it was such a value to have an expert available to ask questions. This is an amazing resource at an inexpensive price!

A question came up after a flight a few days ago, first a bit of a back story, I had installed the AntiSplatAero Crankcase Vacuum kit earlier in the week and had completed a test flight following the installation – everything looked normal. On the flight in question, right after take off I noticed the EGT for Cylinder 3 was much higher than normal. The CHT was lower than normal and I choose to continue the flight and troubleshoot the issue. I experimented with the mixture and power settings, being only a few thousand feet AGL I did not touch the ignition. I kept monitoring the situation but continued on. Once out from under the Minneapolis-St. Paul Class Bravo, I climbed up to 8,500 and did the big pull on the mixture to LOP. Immediately the issue resolved itself and the remainder of the flight was uneventful, well other than the 50 knot headwind.

Getting home I downloaded the engine data and submitted a ticket to Savvy. A couple days later I had a response from Joe the Director of Operations. Our exchange is below:

It is interesting that the run-up Mag check was normal and you can see the instant that the issue first started (see red arrow).

Now off the the airport to inspect the plugs and plug wires – I’m leaning towards the plug wires since I was working around them with the Crankcase Vacuum install (yes, I did press all of them in before sealing up the cowling).
