After missing the last part of Section 1 of the WYBDR, we hit the top section of the COBDR the next day. This had always been our plan, however instead of making it to Leadville for the night we would turn around in Gypsum due to heavy rain. I ride most of this trail a number of times each summer and it is a lot of fun.
After leaving the Colorado river basin there is a double track section up and over last mountain into Gypsum. Some rain had caught us a few miles before the turn for the trail and made us wonder if we could make it. Deciding to give it a try, rock slides the first mile or two had us questioning our decision. Instead we just rode faster to beat the rain that was ahead of us. I mean that is always a good idea, right? It was a risky move but it paid off, we managed to get down before the rain. On the highway back to Steamboat we were finally drenched. Thankfully our Klim gear kept us nice and dry.
