The morning forecast gave us disappointing news, there was no longer a reliable forecast that looked good for us to depart. Major bummer after all of the hard work yesterday. It was a cloudy day, so we had to be on limited power use, a great reason to spend the morning reading.
After lunch everyone was ready to get some exercise, we dinghied into shore. Carl and Roxy headed off down the peninsula road while I took to the main road to Luganville, this time going in the opposite direction. It was good to see a different area and after a stretch of jungle I came on a few homes and the the Harbor Wreck restaurant and bar. No money and limited time I kept on going. Ahead of me were a couple who had walked out of the restaurant, With my fast walking I caught up to them and struck up a conversation with the husband. It turns out they had come hoping to sell their baskets to cruise ship passengers, unfortunately no one took the long taxi ride out to the restaurant so no sales today. But another chance was coming Thursday. Finishing up our chat I explained I needed to hustle and carried on.
A bit further I came into the village of Bria. Much bigger than I had expected with maybe 700 or 800 people and two stores. Heck it even had a “aid” station (nurse). Nearing the edge of the village was what looked like a party with three groups sitting on blankets and a few other ladies possibly preparing food for the group. White people garner quite a bit of attention and there was a continuous stream of “hallo” to each “hello” I called out. Just so darn friendly here.
I was beginning to run short on time, so I only went a short distance more and once I came upon a golf course I snapped a couple pictures and made my u-turn. Passing through the village again I checked with a man I’ll seen who was still waiting for the bus. No schedule here, just stand and wait. They will eventually come. The last person to cross my path was on a bike. He asked my name and if I was from a yacht. Then did I know George? Yep, he has been out to our boat and we gave him some extra canned goods. He was heading to George’s house. Soon enough I was back to the jungle road and then turning on the path to the dinghy. A great 8k hike, which felt so good after being on the boat all day yesterday.
